Lucky 13 Review

Happy November everybody! I don't know how it feels in your neck of the woods, but here in Tennessee it is cold, cold, cold. I woke up this morning craving peppermint coffee and Christmas music. I gave up flavored coffee creamers in an effort to lower my sugar intake, so no peppermint fix, but I've got the music going. Cat has a great playlist at Spotify. Want to join me?  Lucky 13

Speaking of Cat, she released Luck 13 yesterday! Our resident reviewer, Kari, stopped by to give us her opinion on Cat's debut. Check that out below.

November will be another exciting month for us all at Vanity and Pride Press. Cat is all over the blogosphere these days and her next stop will be at Leslie L Diamond's where she'll answer questions submitted by you. Drop by Leslie's and submit your question for a chance to win an ebook. She will also be here next week for a chat with yours truly. That should be fun!

My contribution to the world of JAFF, Dearest Friends, will be released on November 14th. We will have a big celebration on our VP&P facebook page and I will announce the winner of the prize pack. You can still enter for a chance to win by commenting on The Big Reveal post below. I will also be at Leatherbound Reviews on the 18th with an excerpt and Babblings of a Bookworm on the 24th with a guest post. You will have a chance to win at both places. Before those, though, Cat and I will play a fun word association game on facebook on the 13th. What comes to your mind when you hear Fitzwilliam Darcy?

I hope you are all well and warm, curled up with a good book on this cold Saturday. If you need a recommendation, I'd say Lucky 13 is the perfect pick. Let's see what Kari thinks.

Lucky 13, by Kari Singh

Poor Lizzy Bennet, her whole life started out wrong.  Born on the wrong day, wrong weather, wrong sex, the wrong way, and (let’s be honest) to the wrong mother.  At least she has her friends.  She is a fanatical list-maker who kick boxes on the side, and doesn’t realize her own worthiness.

William Darcy, on the other hand, was born on the right side. He had it made…filthy rich and good looking.  He was quite the party boy, until tragedy struck, and left him alone with an inheritance and young sister to take care of.

Lizzy needs a Christmas date to get her mom off her back, and William needs someone to love, it sounds simple.  But, the insults fly, and it looks like it wasn't meant to be.  So, Lizzy tries the dating scene, including personal ads (teehee) and a try with speed dating (cringe worthy, and made me very happy to be married).  Finally, her friend Charlotte sets her up with a Jewish matchmaker.  William, on the other hand, tries hard and fails, mostly, to win Lizzy’s heart

William is a full-time businessman and part-time firefighter (makes me want to become an arsonist), Lizzy is in advertising, and her next assignment is to raise money for the New York firefighters. What better way to raise money than to make a calendar filled with images of HOT, muscular firefighters, especially when one is William Darcy?  I know my pocketbook would be out and the calendar would be hanging over my bed turned to Mr. December (sorry, honey).

Lucky 13 is a modern story with our favorite P & P characters, including Darcy and Elizabeth, Charlotte, Jane, and Richard, even Georgianna and a hilarious Anne.  Our favorite characters are well written and, I felt, mostly true representations of the original (maybe not Anne), but in modern times.  Darcy’s actual insult to Elizabeth is difficult to pull off in a modern story, but this is not at all an issue with Lucky 13.  And, I love how Elizabeth tells Darcy off after they first meet.

I can say that I have been out of the dating world for many years, but if it’s as bad as in the story, I feel for you singles out there!  I don’t remember having to go through so many losers to find a good one. The speed dating was truly scary.

There are new characters, including a Jewish matchmaker, hired by Charlotte, to assist our dear girl.  I could picture an elderly mix between Fran Drescher and Maria Portocalous, the mother in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but smaller. Her character made you want to give her a big hug!

The story isn’t totally focused on Lizzy’s dating though.  We get a glimpse of Darcy’s other family, the firefighters he works with.  They are an obviously close group and support and mourn together.

Let me tell you now, I will never write a review for a story I didn’t absolutely love, and I LOVED this story.  Lucky 13 is campy and fun and makes you wish you were the characters.  The writing is seamless and flows so well!  I urge anyone who enjoys a modern take on ODC to buy and enjoy Lucky13, I will be first in line when it comes out!

I knew she'd love it! Have a great weekend everybody!
